Richard Brown is VP of International Marketing at VIA Technologies, Inc, and has over twenty-five years' experience of working in the hi-tech industry. During this time, he has played an active role in a variety of initiatives aimed at enabling affordable computing and promoting the proliferation of new IoT technologies. As Chair of the Asia Marketing Task Force of the Open Connectivity Foundation, the largest Internet of Things standards group in the world, Richard is responsible for working with ecosystem partners in Asia to implement universal standards for ensuring the interoperability of IoT devices and accelerating the growth of the IoT market.
Richard is also very active in the technology start-up community, acting as a mentor in Start-up Weekends and arranging the first ever 3D Printing Jam in Taiwan. He has spoken on the potential of the IoT, 3D printing and related social manufacturing technologies to boost innovation and creativity at a growing number of events, including TEDx Shanghai and TEDx Taipei.
Born in the UK, Richard has a BA in Chinese language and modern history from the University of Westminster in London, and in 1985 spent one year studying these subjects at Sichuan University in Chengdu. Immediately after graduating in 1987, he went to Taiwan on a scholarship to pursue further studies at Taiwan Normal University, and has lived on the island ever since.
